5Lay fabric on a flat surface and place the screen facedown. Squirt screenprinting ink or fabric paint onto the surface of the screen at the top of the pattern (fig. 5).

6Using a piece of stiff cardboard or an old credit card, wipe the ink or paint down and across the mesh surface of the screen (fig. 6).

7Carefully pull the screen away from the fabric (fig. 7).

8Repeat across the entire surface to create a pattern (fig. 8).

9When the ink or paint is dry, heat-set it according to the manufacturer’s directions, if needed.

Variation:

PICTURE FRAME SCREENPRINTING

You can also use a picture frame to make an inexpensive frame for screenprinting; a larger frame allows for a larger screen and more pattern. Just remove the glass and lay the frame on a flat surface. Trim mesh fabric to the size of the frame plus an additional 1" to 2" (2.5 to 5 cm) on all sides. Staple the sides of the mesh to the frame, pulling the mesh as taut as possible. Create your pattern and print as above.
